Yr 10 TV ADVERTISEMENT

PREP: select 3 screenshots from your TV advertisement
  • Write under each screenshot what is important about the representation of the woman / man / social group.
  • You are likely to start each point with a topic sentence, then draw attention to the key point, then explain it.
  • You may use terms such as denotes, connotes.
  • What to write:
    • Identify the key codes first, always starting with the most striking
    • Formulate a topic sentence in your head; once you have identified this, the rest of the paragraph will write itself
    • Focus on representation: how is the model presenting him/herself?
    • Visual codes include clothes, gesture, posture, framing, setting, facial expression, make-up, accessories
    • Set the advert in context: historical period, social situation
    • Ask yourself: what are the brand's values? what does it promise / offer the target buyer?
    • What are the brand's messages? What is in the slogan?
