Are these films relevant as research?
Molly, Havanna, Frankie
Our film genre has overlapping thriller and psychological drama codes. One source of useful learning was the film work from the TV drama series Wallender, both in terms of narrative (character and events) and editing (how to set the scene in an opening sequence; how to introduce protagonists; how to mix a tracking shot with close-ups).
In the opening sequence of one Wallender episode (Episode 1, Season 1 Sidetracked)), the detective investigates the case of a woman who is traumatised enough to self-harm. We felt that this would a very powerful film opening, as it works by using the enigma code: why is the woman so frightened that she would rather kill herself than face her fears? This creates suspense and mystery, which the rest of the film will unfold. The audience is then hooked.
