TV ADVERTS: HUMOUR, NARRATIVE, TRUTH

Today we study Cinzano Bianco-Joan Collins, Renault: Nicole and Papa, Dove- Evolution.

In the Cinzano Bianco commercial, we look at how couples are represented and where the power resides. We discuss how this has changed over time, especially in car commercials, with 'girl power' driving reprsentations of women as more powerful, whereas in the Cinzano Bianco commercials, Joan Collins is always humiliated.

In the Renault advertisement, we note the trend of some commercials to use an ongoing narrative, often with humour as in the Cinzano Bianco advert, and we think of contemporary examples that do the same, such as those for BT. We research how current car commercials present the relationship between the genders.
 
In the Dove- Evolution commercials, we look at how relatively few cosmetic brands allow realistic, truthful representations of women and talk about why this might be so.
