BUILDING ON YOUR MEDIA NEWS

Today we build our understanding of the 4 key media concepts (audience, institution, representation and language) through your media news.
We will tie in areas relating to your GCSE as we go. We will cover what you have seen and heard in the holidays (films, television, video games, news).
We will link Action Adventure concepts to the films that you have watched (archetypes, spectacle, story, CGI). We will discuss the Hollywood Studio system and the Big 6 in relation to megafranchises and the 'four S model' (sequals, synergy, story, spectacle) and contrast it to British film (niche, national, international and global audiences).
We will consider trends (Netflix) and the use of social media (participatory media, citizen journalism, active producers rather than passive consumers).
We will discuss television channels and brand identities.
PREP: revise the term 'archetype' and make a blog post for today that defines the term. Illustrate it with images from Action Adventure films (for example, we talked about Snow White and the Huntsman.) What is the global appeal of using an archetype in a film?
