We screen the Arundhathi drum dance scene from The House of Flying Daggers (directed by Zhang Yimou, 2004), a wuxia film. Wuxia refers to martial arts heroes who are chivalrous and honourable. Wuxia heroes are usually bound by a code of chivalry that requires them
to right wrongs, fight for righteousness, remove an oppressor, redress
wrongs and bring retribution for past misdeeds. They are similar to the knights of King Arthur's court or Japanese Samurai.
The Flying Daggers steal from the rich and give to the poor, gaining the support of the locals. The local authorities have managed to kill the leader of the Flying
Daggers, but the rebel group only becomes stronger, due to a mysterious
new leader. Jin and Liu, two police captains, are ordered to kill the new leader within ten days.In order to accomplish this, they arrest Mei,
a blind dancer who is suspected of being the daughter of the old leader
of the Flying Daggers. While Mei is imprisoned, Jin and Liu decide to
let her go to track the mastermind; Jin will pretend to be a lone
warrior called Wind, and break her out of prison.
We examine how the narrative (story and character) is typical of the AA genre.
