B322 ACTION ADVENTURE ANALYSIS: SENTENCE STARTERS

Some sentence starters to structure your exam response:

Opening sentence must identify the genre. Most are hybrids:
This extract is from Die Hard, an example of the thriller genre.
This extract is from 2012, a disaster movie
The extract is taken from X-Men: First Class, a superhero movie genre 
Saving Private Ryan, a film of the war genre.
Sherlock Holmes is a crime thriller.
Avatar is a sci-fi genre film.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is a hybrid genre: fantasy and children's film.
Spy Kids is a hybrid genre: spy and children's film.
Raiders of the Lost Ark is a classic action adventure film of the quest genre.
Cowboys and Aliens is a hybrid genre: western, sci-fi action movie.
Robin Hood Prince of Thieves is a hybrid genre: historical, epic, swashbuckler
Pirates of the Caribbean is a hybrid genre: swashbuckler, fantasy adventure film.

Second sentence must identify the conventions used. Use the term convention. State the convention using one or more of these terms: combat and conflict, speed and motion, suspense and jeopardy, spectacle. 
You can integrate character. You must use the terms heroic protagonist, villainous antagonist (or anti-hero, henchmen, side kick, as appropriate).

e.g."The narrative involves the convention of combat and conflict, with a sword fight (gun fight / hand to hand fight...)  involving the heroic protagonist and the villainous antagonist and his henchmen as the damsel in distress watches."

" In common with many AA films, there is a lot of physicality and exciting movement in this extract which is visually spectacular, such as when the hero demonstrates his physical prowess and courage by riding at speed across the uneven roof top ridge of a bazaar."

" The thrill of danger, of exploring the unknown and fighting the elements is celebrated in this classic action adventure sequence in which the conventions of suspense and jeopardy are clear when Aragorn leads his company through a dark forest, up wild mountains and across an exposed plain. Aragorn demonstrates his heroic qualities though......"

What to look for? 
Preparation for an action sequence, chase sequence, a lot of movement, customised vehicles, stunts, speed, escape

jeopardy: danger of death, serious injury

confrontation, good v. evil, hero, villain, sidekick, henchman, damsel in distress, romance element, violence; increasingly now the female protagonist exhibits heroic qualities

combat: hand to hand, fist fight, martial arts, weapons, battles, violence

spectacular, exotic scenery / sophisticated location, dangerous setting

spectacle: huge explosions, large scale destruction, dynamic fights & chases, huge casts (now CGI), SFX

technical equipment, fancy gadgets, fast cars and other vehicles

Ordinary guy: safe, reliable
Lost soul: a tormented being
Chief: dynamic leader
Warrior:
