Yr 10 ACTION ADVENTURE

Introduction: Today we work on learning key terminology identifying camerawork, editing, soundtrack and mise-en-scene. By the end of the lesson you will be able to understand in greater depth concepts related to film language.
  • You should be able to grasp exam techniques for the textual analysis of unseen Action Adventure extracts, using the 1,2,3 points system that is written on the whiteboard. This model of how to achieve level 4 (A grade) marks remains on the board all year!
  • You should have better understanding of the genres codes and conventions, and how to describe them. For example, speed and motion, spectacle, combat and conflict.
  • You will refresh your memories about the three exam questions: q. 1 is about genre conventions, q.2 is about camerawork, mise-en-scene, sound and editing, q.3 is about representation and stereotypes.
  • Key terminology today: parody; ambient / diegetic sound; non-diegetic sound; soundtrack;  orchestral; percussive; dialogue; point of view shot (POV); immersive; stereotype; gadget; establishing shot; two-shot; match cut; arc pan; tilt up /down; edit; hard cut; straight cut; spectacle;  jeopardy & suspense
Activity  You will learn that Action Adventure films are hybrid genres. You need to identify which types of hybrid for the exam as well as to be able to draw attention to AA codes and conventions.
You watch the screening of Austin Powers in Goldmember, the AA parody (3 minutes) on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-AZgBXCsLY

PREP   You will receive a double-page sheet that contains all the language of moving image that the OCR specification requires you to know. Read the sheet. Pick 3 terms that you are unsure about. Look up and write down the definitions and, ideally, find an example for each using the internet that you could share with the class.
