Yr 11 WRITE YOUR TREATMENT

PREP: Write a possible treatment for your own TV crime drama opening and post it on the blog.

What is a film treatment?

A description in the present tense of what happens in your film. Keep the language simple yet forceful and declarative. The purpose of the treatment is to describe the events of the story so that it can be visualized and brought to life. This should be done using the fewest words possible.

How do I write a treatment?

You need to avoid editorial writing when writing treatments and instead speak in an active and present voice. Similarly, you should avoid using words and phrases like "Next we see" - Don't start sentences with "we see". Tell the audience what they see without introducing your sentence with "we see".

Don't be afraid to consult current TV crime drama to check that your production idea is convincing. It's OK to follow a 'formula' as this shows understanding of genre codes and conventions.

Work within your capabilities: keep the cast small enough (although you can recruit parents, siblings, friends for bit parts). You'll be filming mostly in school, so work within what we have to
offer you here.

It needs to end on a 'hook' so that we want to watch more: this is 'the big question'.
